In what is very interesting news, Disney is looking to remake the 1984 hit film Splash, which starred Tom Hanks and Daryl Hannah as a man and the mermaid he falls in love with after she saved him many years ago as a boy. The film would go on to be the launchpad for Imagine Entertainment, founded by the film’s producer and director, Brian Grazer and Ron Howard.
Should the deal go through, Grazer and Howard will serve as producers on the remake, and it looks like two stars are attached to the remake. Channing Tatum and Jillian Bell, who appeared in the sequel 22 Jump Street are looking to reunite on the film.
However, in the new film, the roles will be reversed as Tatum would play a merman who saved Bell’s character as a child and reunite years later. Tatum would also serve as a producer on the film under his Free Association Pictures with partners Reid Carolin and Peter Kieran.
A made-for-TV sequel to the original film was released in 1988 starring Todd Waring as Hanks’ character with Amy Yasbeck as the mermaid.
The remake is still in development with Disney being able to make a deal, so it is unclear when we will see this in addition to the schedules of the leads.
