Considered one of his best works in his amazing career, indie auteur Todd Sheets’ 1997 shot-on-video film has been given the Visual Vengeance treatment and it’s not just a fun movie, but the extras on this Blu-Ray are nothing short of amazing!
In the heart of New York’s seedy underground, a new drug has emerged called Rapture. No one knows where it has come from, but it is responsible for the homeless especially going chaotic and sometimes death. NYPD detectives Jack and Steve have been assigned to find the source of Rapture with Jack going undercover as a bartender in one of the seediest nightclubs in town. All the worth because his job led to the dissention of his marriage and the only supporting him is his teenage daughter, Amy, who lives with her mother.
As Jack and Steve get closer to the truth, they discover something horrifying. The drug is the creation of Asmodeus, a Satanic worshipper who has helped given birth to the Antichrist. The fight between good and evil has come to New York and with the help of Amy and another local, Tamara, Jack and Steve learn the only way to stop Asmodeus and his coven is to get the child and bring her to the last Christian church in the city before it’s too late. But this is not going to be an easy task.
Todd Sheets is not just a filmmaker. When it comes to indie filmmaking, he is the definition of an auteur. With a career spanning over three decades, his films are quality low-budget action and horror that doesn’t hold back on the gore factor. This 1997 film is considered one of his best films in his career. In fact, it was so popular that even the local news in Kansas City did a report showcasing the last day of production.
The film itself is a wild ride through the New York underworld, even though it was shot in Kansas City. However, with a $5,000 budget, Sheets convincingly makes the sets look like something you’d see in 70s to 90s underground NYC. The story seems to come from the viewpoints of our two protagonists Jack and Steve, played by Mark Grover and Nick Stodden. The first half revolves around Jack, an undercover cop who seems to have lost it all due to his job. He lost his wife, who harbored resentment towards him so bad that she even badmouths her own daughter when she stands up for him.
Steve takes over the second half of the film as he leads a resistance force involving Amy, Jack’s daughter; and Tamara, played by Jennifer Geigel. Tamara is a local who saved Amy from the hands of a Rapture-addicted bum while she was looking for her father. Together, they find themselves fighting demon after demon in order to get to the fast growing Antichrist, whose birth scene is one of the most insane scenes of the film that is both eye-popping and jaw-dropping! Add to the mix the iconic “Dolemite” himself, Rudy Ray Moore as the only preacher who may end up helping the good guys. When he is given his own freedom to say lines like “I’m gonna kick you’re a**, fast, until the gas passed, and whatever hurt I put on you, is sure gonna last,” then you know you are in for a massive treat!
The Visual Vengeance Blu-Ray is one of its best as well. There are not one, two, three, but four….yes four versions of the film that are available on the Blu-Ray. They include the 2023 remastered Director’s Cut, the original DVD version, the original VHS version, and an alternate slightly tamer R-rated version that aired on Joe Bob Briggs’ Drive-In-Theater shortly after its release in 1997.
There are also interviews with Todd Sheets, one with co-star Jerry Angell and another where he talked about working with Rudy Ray Moore. Sheets also did commentary on a few of the versions available. There’s also bloopers, behind the scenes footage, and a kickass short film called Fistful of the Undead where a cowboy single-handedly goes hand-to-hand with a group of zombies! Some of the trailers attached to the Blu-Ray are Zombie Rampage, Goblin, directed by Sheets; and Scream Dream, an early Donald Farmer vehicle.
Violent New Breed is an insane movie that makes amazing use of its budget and SFX with Rudy Ray Moore’s appearance one of the many highlights! The Blu-Ray is even more exciting as you are treated to the usual BTS, bloopers, commentary, and interviews…but with four versions of the movie on this, you’re gonna have a ball with this one!!! There’s also a booklet and a “birth announcement” with the original release of the film intact as well as a poster!
The Blu-Ray of this title comes out on January 20th! Order your copy today and get ready for the ride of your life in the battle between good and evil…
