Robert Hiltzik is returning to Sleepaway Camp and he’s taking Kenan Thompson with him!
Reported by Deadline, Hiltzik, the writer and director of the original 1983 classic horror film that turned then 14-year-old Felissa Rose into a horror icon, is writing and directing a new remake/reimagining of his original film. After two shoddy sequels from Michael A. Simpson in the late 80’s, Hiltzik returned to the franchise with 2008’s Return to Sleepaway Camp, which brought back original stars Rose, Jonathan Tiersten, and Paul DeAngelo.
For years, Hiltzik and his wife, the rights holders, have been approached by several companies to do a new version of the original. However, a recently formed production company called AFA, which was co-founded by the aforementioned Kenan Thompson and Johnny Ryan Jr., won the rights due to their company’s mission of “keeping creative control and ownership with the artist, keeping the original architects of the franchise at the forefront of its evolution”.
“I am both thrilled and humbled to be working with AFA on the reimagined Sleepaway Camp. Though I have been approached by several companies regarding the remake of Sleepaway Camp, only AFA has shared my vision and is excited to have me helm the film, therefore preserving the integrity of the original film for the fans, as well as introducing Sleepaway Camp to a whole new generation. Be prepared for a new member of the Sleepaway Camp family,” Hiltzik said in a statement.
Thompson will serve as a producer on the new film alongside Ryan Jr. and Robinson Velasco, Monica Weber, Cory Litwin, and Boris Shvarts will be the executive producers.
No word on casting as of yet as Hiltzik is currently working on the script for the new film. In the meanwhile, you can see the original Sleepaway Camp on various streaming platforms. Here’s the original trailer below:
