Millennial horror icon Sarah French churns out an amazing performance in this slow burn of a horror film from the director of That’s a Wrap.
Faye Dayne was at the height of her fame as an actress when a botched Lasik surgery resulted in her being blind. Feeling a sense of depression and loneliness, she joins a support group with the help of another blind woman, Sophia. The group leader, Luke, can see but is a mute who uses a computer to speak. Faye finds trouble telling her feelings towards the group at first due to the shame. However, as she begins to cope and slowly begins to open up, trouble ensues.
A mysterious man decked out in a white suit and mask with blond wig slowly begins to stalk Faye. The mystery man is a huge fan of the hers and will do anything to meet her. Even kill. As Faye begins to get closer to Luke, she can’t help but feel like someone is following her. The mystery man will go to any lengths to meet his celebrity crush and he has no care about who gets in his way as one way or another, he will find a way to get to Faye, no matter what.
From director Marcel Walz and writer Joe Knetter comes this tale that is more psychological thriller and minimal slasher effort. And that’s okay because it only makes the film more suspenseful. The story of a former major star losing it all due to her blindness trying to cope and start over only to have an obsessed fan stalk her brings to mind films like Wait Until Dark (1967) and Blindsided (2013).
The reason to see this film is the amazing performance of Sarah French, who plays Faye. We see her in the opening listening to a news report about a film she made and we see her in tears as she has lost that glory and is depressed over it. French pulls it off nicely as a woman who is trying to find a way to open up and start over, despite the fact there is an obsessed psychopath stalking her.
Another horror icon, Caroline Williams, is great as Faye’s friend Sophia, who attempts to help her overcome her depression and goes as far as attempting to set her up with group leader Luke, played by Tyler Gallant. Gallant and French would reunite in 2022’s Space Wars: Quest for the Deepstar but as rivals. Jed Rowen is also great as Pretty Boy, the obsessed fan who stalks Faye to the point where anyone who gets in his way will be killed. There aren’t enough kills to satisfy a slasher hound, but the story itself is watchable enough to where one particular death makes very good use of Joe Castro’s SFX.
A sequel, Pretty Boy, was made in 2023 and was just released this week by Lionsgate. As for Blind, people might be turned off by the slow burn and minimal kills, but this does have one of Sarah French’s best performances and yes, she does return for the sequel.
