From the director of the WorldFilmGeek Award-winning short Fckn Nuts comes this insane short starring a horror legend and WorldFilmGeek Hall of Famer.
Jacqueline Diamond, the founder and CEO of the Blue Diamond rehab facility, has passed away to that great big ski slope in the sky. Everyone is mourning her passing. Everyone that is, except her daughter Allison, who feels karma has finally hit Jacqueline for abandoning her when she was 15. After the funeral, Allison meets some of the people Jacqueline helped out and begins to feel uneasy. Soon, she learns something major is in store for her. Something that will change her life forever.
After seeing her 2023 short film Fckn Nuts, one thing I asked myself was what would we see next from Sam Fox as I loved that film so much that it earned the WorldFilmGeek Award for Short Film that year. The answer has finally arrived and this is definitely a batty funeral no one will forget. Once again, Fox brings us a blend of dark and absurdist comedy to the forefront with the story of a self-proclaimed ski guru and rehab director who has passed and her estranged daughter, who seems forced to talk about her in a positive light. It should be mentioned that the film was written by Hypochondriac’s director, Addison Heimann.
Desiree Staples, who also co-produced the film, is great as the obviously uncomfortable Allison, who clearly isn’t excited to talk about her mother at her funeral. However, the big surprise is that Jacqueline is wonderfully played by the legendary Barbara Crampton, who brings a grand dame performance as the deceased head of the titular “Blue Diamond” (which at first name, sounds like it would be a sequel to Fckn Nuts as the title is a brand of almond).
Aside from Staples and Crampton, as we meet some of the people Jacqueline helped, one standout is Chrishell, played by Emily Ashby, whose demeanor looks like it could come out of a horror movie! There’s also Brett and Jason, played respectively by Jadon Cal and Ethan Daniel Corbett, at first glance a LGBTQ couple, but soon reveal something even more shocking, and it should be mentioned that with the exception of Allison, everyone is dressed like they just came out of auditions for Hot Dog: The Movie, complete with an 80s style dance sequence that leads to an insane finale!
Sam Fox does it again with The Blue Diamond as she amps up both the dark and the absurd with great performances from Desiree Staples and Barbara Crampton.
The film is currently on the film festival circuit and special thanks goes to Sam Fox for allowing me to see the film.
