A young woman attempts to live with a medical condition she never expected in this emotional drama from writer-director Molly McGlynn.
Lindy is a sixteen-year-old teenager who has had feelings for her classmate Adam for a long time. However, things have not been easy for her as she deals with her mother Rita, a therapist who has successfully beat breast cancer. However, Lindy hasn’t been able to have a menstrual cycle at all and at her age, it is not normal. When she finally decides to go see an OB/GYN, she learns the truth about why she is clearly having issues.
Lindy has been diagnosed with a rare condition called MRKH Symdrome. The condition involves an incomplete vaginal canal and the lack of a uterus. This causes Lindy to undergo a downward spiral as she tries to cope with having the condition and how it can affect her relationship with Adam. When Adam doesn’t understand why Lindy will not be with him intimately, he rejects her. However, Lindy may have found an unexpected kindred spirit in Jax, an intersex person who knows what it means to be different. Will Lindy finally accept the cards that have been dealt with her?
MRKH Syndrome, which stands for Mayer-Rokitansky-Kuster-Hauser Syndrome is a real and very rare condition that affects an underdevelopment or lack of a vaginal canal and uterus. To bring awareness to the condition, which affects 1 in 4,500 women, writer-director Molly McGlynn made this emotional tale of a teenager who discovers she has the condition and how she tries to deal with the issue. McGlynn, who has the condition, brings to light the reality of how MRKH can affect relationships as well as the self.
Maddie Ziegler has been known for her childhood dancing days on Dance Moms and a few music videos for Sia. Despite getting flack for her performance in Sia’s film Music, she broke out in the high school drama The Fallout opposite Jenna Ortega. Her lead role of Lindy here is her best since The Fallout as she proves to have that emotional content needed to be a great actor. Here, we see Ziegler at her best as her character deals with the rare medical condition and how it affects her relationship with her mother, bestie, and boyfriend but finds a sense of confidence in meeting intersex person Jax, played by a terrific Ki Griffith.
Emily Hampshire provides a bit of comic relief at first in the role of Lindy’s mother Rita, who overcame breast cancer. Rita seems to have completely gotten over the prognosis and aftermath as at times, she comes off as a bit neurotic. Much like Lindy with her condition, we see Rita using various coping methods to deal with her issue until the two reach a breakthrough together after a series of events meant to be up for Lindy come crashing down. This becomes the catalyst for acceptance on the part of both Lindy and Rita.
Fitting In is a terrific and look at a rare medical condition through the eyes of our lead character. Maddie Ziegler definitely has a career outside dancing for herself if she continues in these types of emotional roles as this and The Fallout showcase her energy as a dramatic actress. Molly McGlynn definitely has a winner on her hand while brining awareness to the condition.
