A werewolf looks for revenge in the modern world in Robert Conway’s horror-action film.
For many years, a war has waged between werewolves and a group of hunters who call themselves the Silver Bullets. In the modern-day world, the wolves are a biker gang called the Hellhounds and the Silver Bullets also are a rival biker gang. However, seemingly to have squashed their rivalry, Dave, a prospective Hellhound, has massacred most of who is left in the Hellhounds. However, he made one small mistake. He left Alias alive and now he’s out for revenge.
When Alias tries to be convinced by the retired Rooster not to look for Dave, Alias decides he needs to go after him. He meets Mia, a bounty hunter looking for Dave as he is suspected of kidnapping local folks and has been killing. Reluctantly, Alias allows Mia to join him in tracking Dave down. Meanwhile, local boy Kevin has discovered he has been afflicted with lycanthropy and slowly becomes a werewolf. Alias and Kevin soon learn that the war has taken a major twist and they may have to work together to stop the threat that has plagued them both.
Don’t be misled by the marketing aspect of the film, which indicates that a rivalry between werewolves and hunters is still raging on. However, we only get that as the backstory in the film’s first few moments. The film twists and decides to focus on one of the last few werewolves, a biker, going after the ones who betrayed the group and gets help from a bounty hunter. There is also a second story with a young man who had bit bitten and slowly is becoming a werewolf, but can’t understand why.
Nathaniel Burns is great as Alias, one of the last remaining and most headstrong of the Hellhounds. One would think he would be going after the rival clan of werewolf hunters. However, we go right into the aftermath, where Alias is now going after a traitorous member of the group who not only has most of the clan viciously killed, but also has kidnapped local folk in order to appease another former Hellhound in the form of Lucella, a wolf vixen played by Eva Hamilton, in one of her most deliciously evil roles to date.
Dana Kippel is great as the headstrong bounty hunter Mia, who proves she is smarter than she looks and Alias, becoming impressed with her intelligence and wit, reluctantly offers her to join him to track down Dave, played by Daniel Link. The second story of the film involves Cameron Kotecki as Kevin, who has been not feeling well after an attack. He soon learns he is becoming a werewolf and finds himself learning who is responsible but there is more to his story. Eventually, the two stories will cross paths and it leads to a bit of a twist that helps brings Alias and Kevin together, but the question that is asked…do they become allies or become rivals?
The werewolf effects involve some CGI during the transformation before we see suit actors in the werewolf forms. There is a bit of gore in the film in the style of Dawn of the Dead (the original) and whatnot. There is even a scene where Mia soon learns Alias’ true identity after he is shot and he proceeds to take the bullets out himself to Mia’s complete shock and learns he is completely healed a few hours later due to his lycanthropy.
Hellhounds is not a bad film, but it could have been better to have a modern day wolf vs. hunter motif rather than using it as a teasing backstory. However, Nathaniel Burns, Dana Kippel, Cameron Kotecki, and Eva Hamilton really make the most of their roles and it helps more with the film as a whole. The interconnection of the two stories with a twist really helped make this watchable in the end. A middle of the road film, so it’s ultimately your choice.
The film will be released on DVD and Digital on January 9.
