Finnish musician Anna Eriksson makes her feature film debut with this interesting and visually enhanced look at a Monroe-like figure who comes off as the epitome of sexuality and death.
Marilyn, or M as she is sometimes called, is a very mysterious woman who comes across and impacts the lives of various characters. She may have had loads of affairs, but she is also there witnessing the deaths of various people. M is the middle ground between love and death. She doesn’t care who is involved, but she is there to make an impact and be the figure, perhaps the last thing people see when they pass or the figure men think about when they are feeling intimate.
A modern-day “art piece” or “experimental film” if you will, Eriksson, a well-known musician in her native Finland, took quite a risk making this film. While there isn’t a coherent story, which could make people not want to see it, it is the visuals that make this film what it is. Perhaps inspired by the likes of Buñuel and Duchamp, Eriksson does craft a central figure in Marilyn, or the titular film, that she plays herself.
Eriksson does a great vocal impression of the legendary Hollywood siren when having some very intimate conversations. When we see her, there are times when in one scene, she is seen stitching a wound up that looks like it could come from a horror movie. In other scenes, she appears in the nude, and this is mixed up with vignettes of random people in various situations depicting love and death. It is quite fascinating as an experimental film and Eriksson has recently released her follow-up, W, at the Vienna Independent Film Festival, which looks to go the same route and add something else to the fray.
M is quite a fascinating feature film debut from Anna Eriksson. Definitely a risky move to try her hand at experimental film, she sizzles on screen and is a force behind the cameras as well.
