What do you get when you take the star of a single-named female action film, a former DC superheroine, a recent horror icon, and the youngest of Disney’s Jessie crew? A fun and wild action-comedy from producer turned first-time director Jordan Gertner.
Diamond, Ryder, Ezra, and Daisy are best friends who also couldn’t be more different from each other. Diamond is a affluent marksman who always finds herself getting angry at something. Ryder is a talented skater who is extremely tough. Ezra is a budding action star following in her father’s footsteps. Daisy is an art gallery worker and level-headed.
After a lot of stress has taken its toll on the group, Diamond offers them a vacation to Thailand for some much-needed R and R. Upon their arrival, the girls start having a good time. That is, until they discover one of the luggage is mixed up with a loot full of cocaine. After a fuel-binged night, the girls discover Daisy has disappeared. They soon realize the drugs belong to the notorious Golden Triangle. The girls decide to use their special skills and personalities to hatch a plan to get Daisy back and take down the local Thai cartel working with the Golden Triangle.
This is exactly what we need nowadays. A fun popcorn film that is a throwback to some great and underrated action films of the 80s and 90s. In essence, we need something in the vein of the “Girls with Guns” genre of action cinema. Something where we see females kicking butt and yet, not have to go the exploitative route of say a Roger Corman or Andy Sidaris. In this case, enter producer turned first time director Jordan Gertner, who delivers the goods with this film.
The cast of titular “sheroes” are familiar faces in recent years. Playing the rich and sometimes arrogant Diamond is Anna herself, Sasha Luss. She is the type of person who while having friends, seems to care only about herself and her lavish lifestyle and yet, she seems to be bored with it. Playing the ultracool skater Ryder is Wallis Day, who replaced Ruby Rose as Kate Kane in the second season of the DC superhero series Batwoman. Not only is she tough on wheels, but she proves to be the fighter of the bunch.
Isabelle Furhman is funny as budding action star Ezra. The Orphan franchise star is reminiscent of Mortal Kombat character Johnny Cage as she is one who may look tough on screen, but in reality, has a reputation for not being exactly the star she is known for. She even gets to say the most famous like from Taken. AFinally, there’s the youngest of the group, art gallery worker and level-headed Daisy, played by former Disney star Skai Jackson. It is clear Jackson has put her Disney days behind her because she is the one who gets into some serious chaos which leads to her eventual kidnapping by the bad guys here.
There is support from the new Hellboy, Jack Kesy, as Jasper, who is introduced as the steward of the girls’ flight and soon gets caught up in the action. However, one must decipher which side he is on. Could he be one of the bad guys or one of the good guys? You’ll have to see the film for yourself.
Aside from some of the comic gags of the film, kudos goes out to stunt coordinator Chanchai “Pae” Inthasan, who provides some great action. This includes a fight scene in which Ryder shows off her Muay Thai skills against a giant boxer working for the cartel, played by Elliot Allison. This leads to a crazed interrogation scene in which the girls kidnap the head of the cartel in order to trade for Daisy. And this in turns leads to an all-out explosive finale in the jungle.
Sheroes makes its intention known. A popcorn film full of unlikely female heroes, loads of action, some fun comic gags, and all-around fun. One to just sit back and enjoy!
