Another live-action version of a Japanese manga and anime is in the works for a 2017 release date.

Following the likes of the Rurouni Kenshin trilogy, GatchamanLupin IIIAssassination Classroom, and Attack on Titan, comes Gintama, in which a samurai named Gintoki Sakama and two friends who must stop an alien threat while working as freelancers to pay the monthly rent for their businesses. The manga was created in 2003 by Hideaki Sorachi with the series set to come to an end either this year or next year as the final arc of the manga recently began.

Shun Oguri has been cast as Sakama with Masaki Suda (Karma Akabane in Assassination Classroom) as Shinpachi Shimura, Kanna Hashimoto as Kagura, Masami Nagasawa as Tae Shimura, Masaki Okuda as Kotaro Katsura, Tsuyoshi Muro as Gengai Hiraga, Yuuya Yagira as Toshiro Hijikata, Ryo Yoshizawa as Sougo Okita, and Kankuro Nakamura VI as Isao Kondo.

Yuuchi Fukuda is writing the screenplay as well as directing the film. With the recent Hollywood adaptation of Ghost in the Shell in production, many manga and anime are being adapted into live action including Full Metal AlchemistBattle Angel AlitaBlade of the Immortal, and Bleach.

Gintama is scheduled for a 2017 release date.
