Albert Valentin, Founder
I have written about films since 1999, when I decided to switch majors from Computer Information Systems to one where I found my calling: Film Studies. That year, the Film Studies major officially started at my alma mater and I ended up having a gret mentor in Dr. Martha P. Nochimson, who has written books on David Lynch, Wong Kar-Wai, and had written numerous publications.
During this time, I had written for my alma mater’s new Film Studies newsletter, reviewing B-movies for a section called “The Cheese Shop” and even had an internship at ABC’s “Good Morning America” with my second day being the day that changed the country forever: 9/11.
I would also get my first write-ups for an international publication when I would write about Hong Kong cinema for UK-based publications “Screen Power” and “Jade Screen: The Jackie Chan Magazine” until my graduation in 2003.
In 2008, I had joined the staff of KungFuCinema.com, starting with profiles of martial arts actors and filmmakers then working on reviews of American martial arts flicks and some of the latest Asian action films of the time. That was until 2015, when the site shut down. This became the spark I needed to start a new chapter.
I decided to create a new film blog then, called WorldFilmGeek, where I focused on all movies, no matter where they are from. Getting to do more interviews gave me a sense of confidence as I felt starstruck at time with certain actors and filmmakers. However, the more interviews and reviews I did, I felt more and more comfortable. Then, the COVID-19 pandemic happened.
With Hollywood practically shut down, independent cinema became more and more prevalent. It was then that I made a decision I didn’t realize I was expecting. I decided to shift the focus away from A-list Hollywood and focus on indie cinema and world cinema. The more I kept shifting and promote indie and world cinema, I had planned a possible rebranding back in 2025. I had originally planned to rebrand on WorldFilmGeek’s 10th Anniversary, but decided to wait until 2026.
And that’s where we are today! The Indie World Cinema era has begun with a focus solely on independent cinema and world cinema. It’s been more than two decades since I started writing about films but this is the highlight of my writing.
So thank you for your continued support and here’s to Indie World Cinema.
