From the director of Minnie’s Midnight Massacre and Betty’s Revenge comes this two-film saga based on the hero of 1000 Arabian Nights.
Rachel has a fear of big buildings and under the advice of a doctor, heads to a massive cabin with boyfriend Jake. As they look around the cabin, Rachel discovers a mysterious lamp and finds herself enthralled by it. When their friends Mel and Derrick arrive the next morning, Mel looks at the lamp and jokingly rubs it while wishing for a million dollars. The next day, a bag of money arrives at the cabin out of nowhere.
When Mel believes the lamp may have granted her wish, she next wishes to be pregnant but both she and Rachel realize the lamp may have horrifying consequences. When Mel gives birth right away, Derrick discovers Mel is no longer who seems to be. Jake tells Rachel and Derrick that the lamp has a legend of an orphaned boy named Aladdin, whose pure heart led to him being sacrificed to a cult as a soul-sucking demon. Can the others escape the curse of Aladdin or will something be in store for them?
The world of public domain horror films have been really been amping up thanks to Jagged Edge’s Poohniverse (aka The Twisted Childhood Universe). While we have had plenty of public domain horror over the past few years, one filmmaker has already filmed a whopping four films that have all been released in 2026. And that is Brett Bentman. Having directed the first Minnie Mouse and Betty Boop horror films to be released this year (Minnie’s Midnight Massacre and Betty’s Revenge), Bentman decided to try to up the ante with a 2-film saga based on the legend of Aladdin. Aladdin has been in public domain since 1931 and what Bentman did was quite ingenious.
The central protagonist is Rachel, a woman who suffers from a condition called megalophobia, the fear of big objects. Jake, played by Billy Blair, seems to want to help her overcome her fear but sometimes you can tell something seems off. As for the married couple Mel and Derrick, respectively played by Indira Starr and Jonah Lewis, they have such fun chemistry when they are together with Rachel and Jake. Devanny Pinn is excellent as Rachel as she does her best to overcome her fear and when things go south, she is the one who must overcome her own demons and an actual demon!
With nods to The Shining and Rosemary’s Baby, Indira Starr’s Mel is the one who slowly begins to turn when she rubs the lamp and wishes first for a million dollars. However, it is once she rubs the lamp to be pregnant that it goes insane. This leads to a few “holy s**t” moments and if its not crazy enough, we learn that Aladdin is the genie who was sacrificed from a cult to be the genie because of his pure heart and soul. Becoming the genie turned Aladdin into a demonic force but is never seen, but rather possesses the ones who makes the wishes in hopes to find an innocent like him to be his replacement. Disney fans will have glimpses of lines mixed in the dialogue that work quite well!
Aladdin takes the legend and turns him into a demonic genie who is never seen but uses the power of possession, leading to some excellent performances and a shocking finale with Devanny Pinn’s innocent Rachel leading the way.
