A father and son connect one day with a crazy revelation in this short film.
After forty-seven years of marriage, Ben has become a widower and misses his wife Maggie dearly. However, every Sunday, he finds temporary relief with his son Jason, an aspiring actor. On this Sunday though, Ben is ready to reveal something to Jason that he never expected. Ben hires a prostitute, Heather, but only is looking for someone to talk to and have the feeling of companionship he misses with his late wife. He doesn’t intend to sleep with her at first, but this could be Ben’s chance to find something more that he misses. Will Jason support this decision?
This film from the team who brought us the more serious-minded Good Luck to Me brings a lightheartedness with its tale of a widower and his son meeting on a Sunday. And the chemistry between George R. Hildebrand as Ben and writer Timothy J. Cox as Jason is quite natural and fun. The whole movie has this My Dinner with Andre vibe with the film focusing on just these two characters.
There are very funny moments that shape the heart of the film with Ben questioning Jason on his latest voice over work, which was quite funny. And Jason’s reaction at first to learning of Ben’s new, well relationship if you want to call it that, with Heather, a local prostitute who is actually quite a good cook and perhaps sees Ben as not a cash grab, but someone who like Ben, just needs someone to talk to and it becomes more like The Girlfriend Experience minus the hanky panky. But when Ben finally reveals Jason why he does it, Jason can only understand in a way like he misses his mother but not as much as Ben misses his wife of almost five decades.
Sundays with Dad is lighthearted, sweet, funny at times, and gives a message of warmth and heart between a father and son. The chemistry between its stars is aces with this one.
