A couple attempting to get out of their chaotic life find themselves in a major jam in this action thriller from director David M. Parks.

Vincent and Maya are enforcers for a criminal organization led by local crime boss Dante. However, they have both been contemplating retirement as they have grown tired of the chaotic mess it brings when they do the jobs. When they consider it is time to leave the gang life once and for all, they are offered one more job.

Joining forces with longtime partner Lana and a fellow member Jack, the job is to pull off another heist, a cache of money in an abandoned warehouse. However, upon their arrival, the group soon learns that they have been set up. Now in the fight for their lives, this group must do what it takes to survive while discovering some major shockwaves along the way. Who is on their side? Who is trying to take them out and why? Vincent and Maya must rely on their wits and street skills to find out.

In the world of action thrillers, there are those who amp up the story by engaging in twist after twist, giving the viewers something exciting to watch. However, fans can also enjoy a by the numbers action film that is pretty straightforward, brings in a sense of predictability but as long as the performances are good enough, it defines “popcorn film”. This film falls in the latter category that is driven from some good performances and action scenes that tend to have a more realistic approach rather than flashy choreography.

Mike Ferguson and Twana Barnett play their roles perfectly. Ferguson, a veteran who as of late, has dominated the indie action dynamic working as the muscle in films, does quite well as Vincent, an aging enforcer who along with partner Maya, played by pro wrestler Barnett, is ready to give up the gangster life and live a peaceful life. Of course, their boss betrays them and it leads to dissention and revenge.

LeeAnne Bauer is great in her role of Lana, Vincent and Maya’s most trusted friend while Levee Duplay is quite good with a sometimes over-the-top performance as boss Dante. Cody Cowell’s Jack is the typical henchman who acts as the new muscle of the group and look out for a brief appearance from Sorority of the Damned star and director Joe Davison as a goofy security guard before the last action set piece begins.

Last Hit is a popcorn action film, a by-the-numbers film but works well thanks to Mike Ferguson and Twana Barnett’s performances as well as the realistic action scenes.  It’s not perfect, but its intention is there. Just sit back and enjoy the ride!
