Considered a sister film to Bret McCormick’s cult classic gory mutant film The Abomination, Matt Devlen’s super 8 horror film ramps up with a gore-filled third act that is just insane…and it is now available on Blu-Ray from the gang at Visual Vengeance!

In the small town of Poolville, Texas, a spill from a chemical plant has caused locals to undergo a transformation to mutant zombies. A young biologist, Arlene, is sent to Poolville to investigate and finds herself in the crosshairs of hitchhiker Kevin, whose father has had beef with Arlene because she refused to work for him and believes Kevin is there only to convince her otherwise. Determined to get to the bottom of things, Arlene reluctantly takes Kevin with her for the ride on the condition that he doesn’t pull any stunts.

Meanwhile, the mutants are slowly evolving and when Arlene and Kevin encounter one of them from under her car, they narrowly make their escape. An attempt to reach police results in a conversation with local redneck Wade, who offers to help in exchange for a possible date. When Wade brings the duo to his mother’s house, it becomes the catalyst for all hell breaking loose. Can the trio find a way to stop the chaos before it’s too late?

This horror tale from Matt Devlen is quite fascinating that those who enjoy a Super 8 film may like it as well. A companion of sorts to Bret McCormick’s 1986 film The Abomination, this film was produced by McCormick and was filmed right after that film. Where McCormick’s film involved a young man possessed by parasites that causes a killing spree, this film involves a chemical spill turning locals into mutant zombies. The great thing is that the film also stars the two leads of The Abomination, Scott Davis and Blue Thompson.

Thompson plays Arlene as a serious biologist hellbent to get to the bottom of things when it comes to the contamination that has caused locals to transform into spewing zombies with a taste of flesh. As for Davis’ Kevin, he comes off like a free-spirited man who tries his hardest to convince Arlene to let him join her in the investigation as it seems he wants to break from his father’s company. Of course this leads to Arlene being a bit reluctant and not convinced. However, when Brad McCormick’s Wade enters the picture, it does bring some necessary comic relief.

The gore of the film starts out sporadically and the zombies themselves look great, a combination of Bill Paxton’s final state in Near Dark and Troma’s slime spewing mutants in Class of Nuke ‘Em High. However, the third act is where the gore factor amps up to ten. They are wildly insane and end on an unexpected note that is a shocking factor on its own.

The Visual Vengeance Blu-Ray has a great remaster of the film itself and has some fun special features. They include an interview with Blue Thompson herself and her experiences making both that film and The Abomination; an interview with Mark Pirro; outtakes, deleted scenes, Muther Video intros, acting reel of Barbara Dow, and more.

The Blu-Ray case comes with a mini comic book adaptation by Marc Gras, a poster, and a surprise in the form of a Ozone-branded “puke bag”!
