A young man gets a life lesson in this short film that is set to debut later this year in the film festival circuit. 

Jamarcus Rose is a young prospect in baseball who has been dealing with the passing of his mother. Living with his grandmother, he discovers that she has enrolled him in the Big Brothers of America program and that he will be getting a visit today from his “mentor”. At first reluctant, Jamarcus eventually meets Jasper. Jasper tries to get along with Jamarcus, who shows reservation. However, after learning Jasper also plays baseball, the two soon forge a bond that slowly becomes a “brotherhood”. 

From director Marcellus Cox, this may look like a promotion for the Big Brothers of America organization at first. However, it is a great story about a young man who is sheltered at first only to learn his “mentor” has something in common with him and the two begin to slowly bond. The chemistry between Duane Ervin’s titular character and Stephen Cofield Jr.’s Jasper is the heart of the film as the duo prove to forge a brotherhood. 

It’s great to see the transition of Jamarcus from a reclusive young man grieving over his mother to confident once he lets his steam out to a neutral party. Once he does after a baseball game, we can see there is a bit of apprehension that having a late mother with issues may result in him following in her footsteps. However, Jasper is there to make sure that it doesn’t happen. 

Jamarcus Rose & Da 5 Bullet Holes is a very emotional short film about the lessons of life and the power of friendship with an unforgettable finale. It is both emotional and confident in its storytelling. Definitely one to check out when it hits the film festival circuit. 

The film will begin running in film festivals in April 2026.
