This is a night no one will forget when the titular clown wreaks havoc upon a small town in this feature film adaptation of the short film.
As a child, young Jennifer Evans had endured so much in her life. From a mother who didn’t really care to getting relentlessly bullied at school, she found happiness with a local clown who would entertain kids at the park by her home. Flash forward twenty years later and things have not been much better at all for Jennifer.
Now married and going by Jennifer Sullivan, she works a dead-end job. In addition, her husband treats her very poorly and again, her mother always berates and mocks her. However, she does find happiness again by becoming Jenn-O the Clown, entertaining the local kids at the park. But the taunting and bullying from her family has gone too far. With a love of her work as a clown and horror films, a night on the town will prove to be unforgettable and it begins with her family.
What started as a short film gets the feature film treatment with Patrick Rea at the helm with Eric Winkler writing the screenplay about how far one can go in order to get the respect she deserves. It feels like a character study into the psyche of a young woman who loves clowns and horror movies and is always mocked and taunted by her family with the exception of her older sister. It goes from the mother to the mother and her husband and quite frankly, she’s had enough.
Jennifer Seward is excellent in the role of Jennifer/Jenn-O the Clown. When she’s Jennifer, she finds solace in co-worker Ryan, played by Tim Shelbourne. When they have a conversation about favorite movies, Ryan looks a bit uncomfortable at first but does have a liking for her. Meanwhile, after her stints as Jenn-O, when she comes home, she gets rebuffed by her husband Steve, played by Dan Daly, who sits there and watched the Three Stooges all day. It is when he throws pasta at her that becomes the catalyst for her night of chaos.
There are also two detectives on the case when Steve’s family call to inform them they hadn’t heard from him. These detectives are the definition of a buddy action act with Nicole Hall’s tough and rugged Detective Marshall and Matt Leisy’s sometimes bumbling Detective Barnes.
There are plenty of kills in this film that will satisfy the horror fans. From strangulation to a gunshot, one highlight comes in the third act when Jenn-O becomes a one-man clown wrecking crew unleashing mayhem in a haunted house and Seward does it all without even speaking a word as she pulls the mute act in her Jenn-O persona but speaks when she’s Jennifer. It becomes like a switch that goes from wallflower to…cue the Talking Heads…psycho killer.
Super Happy Fun Clown is a fun wild horror film that is a character study of a woman who switches from innocent and abused wife to psycho killer clown with Jennifer Seward front and center in a fantastic performance in the titular role.
The film is now streaming exclusively on Bloodstream. You can see the film here and also subscribe to Bloodsteam.
