Originally released in 2014, indie horror auteur Joe Hollow has re-cut and now unleashes his own version of this genre thriller pitting humans and demons in a war to stop a prophecy.

A demonic priest, Asmodeus, has unleashed and recruited innocents who prepare to follow the word of Lucifer. They include a new Watcher in Elizabeth and an ageless Marishka. When Asmodeus learns from Lucifer’s wife Tatiana that a prophecy is coming in the form of the descendant of the archangel Seraphim, he looks to find the means to ensure it doesn’t happen.

Meanwhile, the Mother and the Father, a pair of fallen angels, have taken two girls under their wing and have watched over them. When a young woman has lost a pendant that could be the key to the prophecy, she eventually finds it and returns it to a mysterious cloaked lady. Meanwhile, Serena, a middle-aged woman from Italy has come to town and questions all that is happening. The fate of the world lies in the balance. Who will come out on top? Good or evil?

Originally released as Disciples in 2014, Joe Hollow had a bit of a different vision in mind when the film was released under that title. However, he would go on to re-cut the film and it is time that he brings his true vision to the world. Depicting the legendary war between good and evil, we see them in the forms of fallen angels and demons with a band of humans caught in the middle taking sides.

Genre fans are surely going to enjoy this on star power alone as some of horror’s all-time greatest icons appear in some major supporting roles. Brinke Stevens plays Tatiana, one of Lucifer’s wives. Bill Moseley plays drug dealer Dread, who makes a deal with Asmodeus for his protection. Linnea Quigley plays a forecaster, Raine, who informs the young woman, Victoria, of the prophecy. Debra Lamb goes back to vampiric form as Marishka. Debbie Rochon plays Elizabeth, the new Watcher and disciple of Asmodeus. Angus Scrimm plays demonic council member Winston. And the late great Tony Todd takes on the role of Lord Belial.

The film also makes good use of some of the excellent millennial talents of the genre. They include Rachel Grubb, a staple of some of Joe Knetter and Sarah French’s early works, as the fallen angel Mother while Elissa Dowling has a small role in one of Winston’s servants. Victoria and Barbara Magnolfi’s Serena may be the keys in ensuring the prophecy and this leads to both Asmodeus and the Angels to find them before Lucifer’s highest council appears and ends it once and for all.

The Devil’s Disciples is a horror fan’s dream depicting the battle between good and evil. A stellar cast of horror icons and new talents make up with a combination of graphic violence, exploitation, and the questioning of religion in war. Definitely worth checking out this director’s cut from the one and only Joe Hollow.
