With his latest film The Shadow’s Edge getting some rave for his role as a retired cop back in action against a shadowy mob boss, Jackie Chan shocked fans over the weekend with some major news.
A social media post from Chan revealed he is currently location scouting in Almaty, Kazakhstan for a new film. Then, shortly after the post, the project was revealed. It is a 4th installment of Chan’s celebrated Armour of God franchise.
The original film, released in 1986, is famous as the film that almost killed Chan…literally. Chan almost died on the set of the film after a simple stunt went awry, forcing him to have surgery. The footage, which was part of the film’s “prologue”, was directed by Eric Tsang but after his recovery, Chan directed the remainder of the film himself and it was a massive hit in Hong Kong.
This led to the 1991 sequel Operation Condor, where Chan’s mercenary “The Asian Hawk” joins three young women in finding a cache of Nazi gold in the middle of the Sahara desert with of course, mercenaries and a revenge-seeking ex-Nazi on their trail. The film was successful as well.
21 years after that film, Chan would play JC, who is confirmed to be that of the adventurer/mercenary in a 3rd installment, Chinese Zodiac aka CZ12 in 2012. Chan is hired by Oliver Platt’s character to retrieve 12 statue heads that represent the Chinese Zodiac but complications arise when he is double-crossed and finds himself facing off against various rivals. The film would mark the first film appearance of his real-life wife, Joan Lin, since her retirement after marrying Chan in 1982.
The new film’s plot details are unknown but it looks as if the official title is Armour of God 4: Ultimatum and judging from the title and the fact that Chan is already in his early 70s, this could be his “farewell” to one of his most iconic characters.
Another of Chan’s projects still in development is the long awaited sequel to his 2004 film New Police Story, which would mark the feature film directorial debut of his co-star from the original, Nicholas Tse, who stated he agreed to direct only if Chan would be the producer. Last heard of the news is that Daniel Wu‘s villain character would be returning and seeking revenge by making a mockery of the cops via the media. Chan and Tse would also be returning with Tse’s character set to be the lead and Chan serving as his mentor, the cop from the first film.
It is unclear when to expect either Armour of God 4 or New Police Story 2 but here’s hoping we see them in 2026.
