Sophie Turner is perfectly cast in this thriller which sees her trying to move forward only to go two steps backwards in a fight for survival.
She was once America’s sweetheart. However, when an iPhone hack and leak revealed her pregnancy, television series actress Lauren Lane’s world is turned upside down. Reeling from the backlash and drama, she has decided to take a break to find for herself. She rents out an AirBnB home and brings her dog Georgie. However, when she confronts her older co-star Peter, the baby’s father, and tells him she needs time, he becomes nervous.
As Lauren tries to clear her head and have a quiet time at the home, one night, she discovers two men, Darren and Merg, who break in an attempt to rob the place. Georgie is hurt in the attack but manages to escape. Lauren finds a nearby panic room and finds herself accidentally trapped. To make matters worse, Peter has hired Kroft, a private security agent who is also a hitman, to track Lauren down and silence her.
What is quite fascinating about this film is that this is something that truly delves into the psyche of the Hollywood stars who have, maybe at one point in their lives, found themselves in a complicated situation and how to go about dealing with it. Case in point, when James Gunn was originally fired from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 for way past tweets that were deemed offensive, he took some time off, kept it cool, and eventually got his job back. This film takes that concept but adds a twist of adding “two steps backwards” for our protagonist as she deals with not one but two complications in the aftermath of the scandal.
With her run as Sansa Stark, perhaps one of the most abused and tormented characters on Game of Thrones before finally making her mark to stand up and rise like a phoenix, Sophie Turner couldn’t have been a better choice for the role of Lauren, the Hollywood star who faces a scandal and two complications in the aftermath. She just wants peace in hopes this will all somehow blow over. However, we soon learn who her baby daddy is, Billy Campbell’s Peter (who plays her TV dad no less), and he’s totally worried that the scandal will turn into a #MeToo movement. This is where complication number one comes in the form for hitman/private security Kroft, played by a very sly Peter Mensah.
Complication number two comes in the form of Marcus, played by Gianni Paolo. The manager of the AirBnB Lauren rents, he seems to have an unrequited crush on her and watches her. However, his ex-con roommates Darren and Merg, played by a very creepy Rhys Coiro and impulsive Forest Goodluck, have other plans and use Marcus as a pawn in their attempt to rob Lauren. Katey Sagal plays the kindhearted Loretta, a woman who sees the injured Georgie and unwittingly puts herself in the situation during the film’s second half.
Trust proves one thing. If there is one actress who can play a role where she is put down only to rise up like a phoenix and overcome the odds, it’s Sophie Turner. And while Game of Thrones first show this, this film puts the stamp on it.
The film will be released in select theaters on August 22.
