This horror anthology is a B-movie lover’s dream with some of its shocking scenes, but you can’t help the in-between scenes with Joe Knetter and Sarah French, who goes by her former screen name of “Scarlet Salem” here, bring a bit of comic relief.
Debbie is a young woman whose car has broken down and an attempt to get help ends up being majorly futile. However, a truck driver arrives and offers to take her to her destination as it is on his way. As the duo rides, the driver explains that he has a family but he is glad to have left home as he starts telling her some insane stories from his hometown that’s sure to be a scare.
The first story involves a dinner date that starts out pleasant but soon goes horrifically wrong for the young woman. The second story involves a man going to a bar hoping to find some action. He gets his wish, but his dream soon becomes a nightmare. Finally, there’s a morbid story of a pair of strange clowns who cause a family of siblings to do the unthinkable and it goes very bad for them. But that soon isn’t the end of it as of yet.
Produced and directed by the trio of Brant Johnson, Kevin Myhre, and Jason Stephenson, this anthology delves into the worlds of love, sex, and horror wrapped up in a nice little package that is told by our truck driver, played by the great horror auteur Joe Knetter. The driver tells his stories to young Debbie, played by WorldFilmGeek Hall of Famer Sarah French, credited as “Scarlet Salem” (a name she used until 2011, when she decided to use her real name). We see Debbie get grossed out and at times, she gives off a “wtf” vibe with certain things.
The stories are quite intriguing and they all have one thing in common aside from the fact that they combine relationships and horror. And that is actress Rachel Grubb, who appears as different characters in all three vignettes. In the first, she appears as a woman who thinks she is on a great dinner date with what seems to be a dapper guy. In the second, she is one of the two ladies who gives our lucky guy his dream only to revert it into a terrifying nightmare. The final story has Ari Lehman, the original Jason Voorhees of Friday the 13th, and Jon Knetter (Joe’s brother) as two brothers who see their sisters and do the unthinkable in taboo but all ends up disastrously. But just when you think it ends there, it doesn’t but the finale is quite a hoot thanks to French and Knetter’s performances.
Terror Overload is a fun horror anthology that has some great tales of terror mixing relationships and horror but Joe Knetter as the driver and Sarah French as the passenger really help drive the film in between and the finale.
The film is streaming on Tubi.
