Horror icon and WorldFilmGeek Hall of Famer Debbie Rochon brings the scares and the sultriness in this great horror film from filmmaker Joe Hollow.
Sienna and Jack are a married couple who are having major issues in their relationship. Sienna feels unwanted but yet she knows a while back, she made a major mistake. Jack, a writer, is having severe writer’s block and between that and the issues with his marriage, he has hit a major roadblock. Meanwhile, a young woman, Vivienne, is struggling with the loss of her family and contemplates ending it all but decides not to.
When Jack is given a mysterious VHS tape from his publisher, demanding he send in a treatment in three days or he’s finished, he sees the tape. There, he sees a masked man and a young woman engaging in love and violence. As Jack delves deeper into watching the tape, Sienna is doing whatever she can to save their marriage. As both wrestle with their faults and Vivienne dealing with her issues, a demon known as the Death Dealer comes into their lives, hoping they can both face and embrace their fears in order to take their souls.
From Joe Hollow’s “Diary of Death” comes this film, which connects two stories with the core one being the downs and very few ups of a marriage with the side story of a woman who lost her family. As the film progresses, we get a look at how a VHS tape involving a couple who mixes love and violence, begins to result in dark truths coming out and gives us a more intimate look at the characters while we see demons wreak havoc to force the characters to face their faces and embrace them.
One definitive reason to see this movie is the one and only Debbie Rochon. She shows an amazing emotional range, from heartbroken to sultry, and then to scary, all wrapped in a nice little package as Sienna. A broken wife who is still paying for her mistake in the eyes of her husband, she hopes for forgiveness and love again. However, her husband Jack, played by director Hollow, is focused on his writing as a means to hide the fact he’s still not over the pain Sienna had caused him. Hollow as well gets to shine with his emotional range, but add to the fact he also plays two other characters in head demon Death Dealer (not the Shang-Chi character) and Diablo, the masked man in the video.
There are a few insane scenes involving death in part where Adriana Uchishiba’s Livinia unleashes on an unsuspecting victim and even attempts to get to Sienna in one of her recurring nightmares. August Kyss is also great as Vivienne, who we see venting to her mom about her mistake and at first, tries to end it, but decides not to. We soon see her shifting towards nearly making another mistake and this leads to a scene where Sienna has Jack try ecstasy where we see both Rochon and Kyss at their sultriest. This leads to an unexpected finale where it becomes jaw-dropping.
Flesh of the Unforgiven is a great horror film that brings out one of Debbie Rochon’s greatest performances thanks to her combination of emotions of heartbreak, scary, and sultry. Joe Hollow shows he is a force both in front and behind the lens and August Kyss also deserves kudos for her role. Horror fans should definitely see this one.
Special Thanks to Joe Williamson for having me check this film out!
