A group of people encounter a Celtic monster in this film written, edited, directed, and starring Matt Sampere.
Tim is getting ready to celebrate Halloween but the day has already turned out bad. While picking pumpkins, he is confronted by local Mr. Brownstone despite offering to help him. He also learns that his father, an EMT, has to work and he has to stay home to take care of his mother Linda. Linda is battling brain cancer and despite having a seizure, she is a fighter and Tim knows she is a strong woman.
Meanwhile, Tim’s friends Tramer, Nate, Isaac, PJ, and crush Danielle decide to prank Mr. Brownstone. When they seek a sack on the porch, Nate forces Tramer to grab it. They all go to Tim’s house to check up on him but when Nate decides to open the sack, it becomes a moment of regret. When they attempt to return the sack, they find a book. They soon learn they have unleashed the Aos Si, a Celtic monster who looks for offerings on Samhain. Now that they have stolen the sack, they are about to face the wrath of Aos Si. Can they find a way to stop the creature before it’s too late?
Matt Sampere is definitely a name to look out for when it comes to the horror genre. This film is quite a wonderful film that may have a few tropey characters, but also has a sense of heart when it comes to his character of Tim. As we see him struggle with taking care of his mother, played by the great Monique Parent, we also see him forced into a situation thanks to his friends, in particular one specific character (it’s always that one guy of the group) where he tries to fend off against the Aos Si (pronounced Ee-she), a creature who comes every Halloween to be appeased.
As mentioned, some of the characters have tropey characteristics, such as the goofball best friend, the love interest, and the one character you can’t wait to get theirs. In the case of Hunter Kohl’s Nate, he is nearly the horror movie equivalent of King Joffrey of Game of Thrones. He’s the one character you hate so much because he causes the chaos and yet, thinks he is the ringleader of the group. He also tries to convince Tim to do the unthinkable when it all boils down to things just to appease the Aos Si. Now, like Jack Gleeson as Joffrey, do not hate the actor because it just shows Kohl showing his best with the role. As they say, “don’t hate the player, hate the game”.
The Aos Si is quite an interesting figure of horror. The character, played by Alan Maxson, is a Celtic figure with a somewhat Jack-O-Lantern face who looks very menacing. There are some great kills in the film, including a little arm ripoff, a little disembowlment, and a very unexpected kill that came out of nowhere, giving us one hell of a twist. The end credits read “The Aos Si Will Return” and I sure hope that will happen because I would love to see more of this creature.
Creeping Death is a really good horror film that meshes Irish folklore with a bit of comic relief and some great kills including an unexpected one that will guarantee a jaw drop. Matt Sampere knows his horror and here’s to hoping he does a sequel.
