A couple engages in a fight for survival in the latest film from the director who brought you I am Rage and The Redwoods Massacre

Ben and Sarah are celebrating their honeymoon by taking a road trip to the countryside. En route to their destination, they see a broken down van and meet Shaun, the driver. Sean needs help looking for a ride. However, Ben and Sarah’s RV also breaks down and while waiting for a tow truck, Ben and Sarah begin to learn about Shaun and his love of hunting. Sarah begins to feel uncomfortable and her feelings soon become a reality when Shaun shoots Ben and ties up Sarah and slowly stabs her.

When Ben notices two people who look like him and Sarah, he finds Sarah dead and now he’s hunted down by Shaun. Ben discovers that he and Sarah have been cloned for people to hunt the couple down for their own pleasure and sport. Ben, stealing Shaun’s phone, learns he can use the phone to give both himself and a clone of Sarah an upgrade with intelligence and fighting skills to take down the hunters once and for all.

The latest film from David Ryan Keith gets to mesh his love of science fiction, a taste of horror, and hyperkinetic martial arts. While he pulled two of the three off with I am Rage a few years back, this film is quite fun in its own right. The film could be called “Attack of the Clones” as it is appropriate for such a film. However, it is pretty good how Keith executes in terms of story and visuals.

Reuniting with Keith on this film is the awesome Hannaj Bang Bendz. Seriously, she needs to make more films of the genre and do bigger films as well. She and John Love are truly the heart of the film as their chemistry is that good. Even with the realization that they have been cloned and are not sure what’s going on, they still show some great emotional chemistry together. That’s when they are not kicking some serious butt together. Gary Kasper brings out both his slyness and viciousness as Shaun, a nasty hunter who will do whatever it takes to get his device back to take control of Ben.

There are other supporting characters who serve as hunters against Ben and Sarah, including a crazed father who teaches his no more than 10-year-old son how to shoot against a Ben clone. However, the best scene involves Ben and Sarah taking on “pest control”, a band of armed guards using a variety of martial arts and firepower culminating in a team-up of shooting down that would make John Woo and Ringo Lam proud with Chris Torres’ expertise as stunt coordinator.

Primal Games may at first seem like a typical hunter vs. hunted action film but adds a very intricate sci-fi twist to things. This is a great film from David Ryan Keith and one thing is certain: we need more Hannaj Bang Bendz!

The film will be released on Demand and Digital on May 6. Special Thanks to David Ryan Keith for allowing me to see the film.
