WorldFilmGeek Hall of Famers Martial Club have unleashed their passion project and it is freaking awesome!!!
The Wolf Fang MMA Gym wants to prove that they are the best martial arts school in town. To prove it, they do to a rival martial arts school, Martial Club. After ridiculing the master and his students, a challenge is met between the gym’s champion, the Wolf Fang Killer, and the Martial Club. If Wolf Fang wins, Martial Club will close down. Who will succeed in this challenge?
For years, YouTubers Martial Club has astounded fans of Hong Kong cinema with their love of kung fu and other martial arts skills through various shorts and also have a knack for comedy. With influences ranging from Jackie Chan to Shaw Brothers, this group is one of the best and so popular they made an impact on the big screens with roles in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and Everything Everywhere All at Once.
This 26-minute short is their passion project and it’s a damn good one. Utilizing influences from classic Shaw Brothers to the classic Dragons Forever, we get to see a challenge between traditional kwoon Martial Club against the more modern MMA gym Wolf Fang, represented by their champion, Wolf Fang Killer, excellently played by D.Y. Sao, a longtime collaborator of the team.
The fight scenes, choreographed by the trio of the Le Brothers and Daniel Mah, we see shades of tricking mixed amazingly with shapes and basher styles of classic kung fu. Of course, if you know your kung fu films, the film also has shades of Fist of Fury (in the form of the annoying cohort of Wolf Fang Killer who brings to mind interpreter Wu from the film) and even Five Superfighters in terms of the finale. All in all, this is a great homage to the world of classic Hong Kong action cinema!
If you love kung fu with a taste of modern HK action films, then Shaolin Avengers will be your cup of tea! Martial Club continues to strive and it is clear this team deserved their place in the inaugural WorldFilmGeek Hall of Fame in 2020.
