In this week’s Women of Horror profiles, we look at WorldFilmGeek Hall of Famer Reine Swart.

Born on May 17, 1990 in South Africa, Reine attended the Afrikaanse Hoër Meisieskool in Pretoria. While she earned a degree in industrial engineering from the University of Pretoria, something bigger was destined for Reine. She made her debut in a TV series, “VIlla Rosa” in the role of Nadine and appeared in some TV and short films before making her feature film debut with a small role in the film “Somer Son”.

Her breakout role came a year later in 2015, as Yvette Lawrence in the film adaptation of Leon de Villiers’ novel “Die Pro”. While Reine continued films, her love of horror would soon come with her lead performance of Chloe Van Heerden, a new mother who experiences depression to the point of mental instability in “Siembamba”, released internationally as “The Lullaby”.

While she continued making films outside the horror genre, it is clear that horror is definitely one of her favorite genres. In 2017, she played news reporter Carly McFadden, whose news station is overrun by zombies on an episode of SyFy’s hit series “Z Nation”. In 2020, Reine starred as Rian Miller, a high school valedictorian who during a high school reunion is forced to fight for survival with her friends in the underrated “Triggered”.

That same year, Reine made her directorial debut with the horror film “The Hex”, the story of a woman who returns to South Africa after her mom’s death and discovers a possible connection to a witch doctor’s curse. With the twists and turns along with tenacity, the film is definitely a great psychological supernatural meshing.

For her accomplishments in both the horror and South African film industries, Reine was inducted to the WorldFilmGeek Hall of Fame in 2022.

In February 2025, a new South African post-apocalyptic adventure, “BOS”, aka “The Forest” which was written, produced, and edited by her, was released by Janson Media and is available for rent or buy on Amazon Prime Video.

As of this post, Reine had co-written “Flesh”, an upcoming horror film starring Danielle Harris and continuing work on post production for various projects.
