An Indian security agent and a top Chinese agent team up to retrieve a stolen artifact in this action thriller.
In the island country of Mauritius, a branch of the National Security are tasked with retrieving a rare jade statue from China as a loan for an upcoming exhibit. Led by Agents Nad and Varun, the retrieval goes off without a hitch. However, on the journey back, they are ambushed by a band of mercenaries. The chief is really upset and at a meeting with the Chinese ambasassdor, it is suggested China brings one of their best to help with the case.
Enter Agent Yuan, considered a top ranking agent capable of helping Agent Nad on the case. They have a prime suspect in Raul, a top crime boss who has an army of soldiers. When Nad discovers Raul is the one responsible for the jade theft, he and Yuan team up to track down Raul and his army. However, for Nad, it is more than retrieving the jade.
This action thriller, written, produced, and starring Nadeem “Nad” Sham, had a lot of potential. It does have a by-the-numbers plot where two agents join forces to retrieve a stolen artifact. There’s even some pretty good chemistry between stars Sham and Naomi Willow as agents Nad and Yuan. Yes, Nad tends to flirt with Yuan but don’t expect some sort of romance between them as the mission here is the priority.
If Sham and Willow’s chemistry is good then of course, despite being a by-the-numbers action film, another standout is the location of Mauritius. The film has some great use of locations and aerial views of the island and does elevate the film somewhat, even in a “tourist video” kind of way.
If there is a negative in the film, it must be an over-the-top villain in Raul played by Vincent Pellegrini. And when I say over-the-top, it is definitely noticeable. The delivery of the lines is pretty laughable for the most part and if that was crazy enough, the action scenes are a mixed bag. The chase sequences are actually pretty fun to watch, taking advantage of the Mauritius landscape. The same can’t be said for the fight scenes. They are sometimes extremely painful to watch as we see too many quick cuts and camera angles so bad in one fight where Willow must do a roundhouse kick that clearly misses the mark and yet the opponent still sells the hit.
Agents is ultimately a mixed bag where the good very narrowly outweighs the bad, especially when a major twist is revealed that comes out of nowhere and manages to still connect the story. Ultimately, it’s your call.
The film is now available On Demand.
