It’s that time as we near the end of 2024! Yesterday, the Nominees for the 5th Annual WorldFilmGeek Awards were announced on YouTube.
This has been the toughest competition to date as there are so many good films that came out this year. Sifting through over 130 films from November 1, 2023 to October 31, 2024, there are films that have really stand out in terms of its aesthetics that they deserve to get nominated. There are films people might not know about and therefore, are underrated gems that need to be seen.
Diana Ringo‘s film adaptation of George Orwell’s novel 1984 received the most nominations this year with a staggering eight nominations, including Best Cinematography, Best Editing, and Best Supporting Female Performance, a feat for Ringo, who did all of the behind the scenes work herself and appears in the film.
The movie that made the big story of 2024, Terrifier 3, is up for a whopping seven awards, only second to 1984, with Best SFX Makeup, Best Supporting Performance for David Howard Thornton‘s new icon of horror in Art the Clown and Lauren LaVera nominated for Best Lead Female Performance for her role of Sienna Shaw. Damien Leone is up for two awards, one for Best Director and Best Editing.
Another standout this year is the sequel Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey II, which proved to be the case where a sequel is superior to the original. The film is nominated for six awards, including Best Horror Film, Best WTF Film, and Best Lead Male Performance from this year’s recipient of the Breakout Star Award, Scott Chambers.
Two films could be the surprise films of the year as they marked the directorial debuts of two actors, who prove they can be a force to reckon with behind the cameras and are both up for the Best New Director award. The first is Australian martial arts powerhouse Bren Foster, whose film Life After Fighting is up for five awards, including Best Action and and Stunts and Best Action Film. Foster is also nominated for Best Lead Male Performance for his role of a martial arts instructor who singlehandedly takes on a human trafficking ring after two of his students are kidnapped.
The second is former Baywatch star Brande Roderick, who stars and takes the helm on the 1970s set horror film Wineville. Inspired by classics such as the original Texas Chain Saw Massacre, the story of a single mother returning to her family home to learn its deadly secrets is up for Best Cinematography, Best Editing, and Best Horror Film in addition to Roderick’s nomination for Best New Director.
The LGBTQ+ horror film Ganymede is also up for five awards, dominating mainly in the acting & technical categories for Best Cinematography (Oscar Partridge), Best Supporting Performances (David Koechner and Robyn Lively) and Best Lead Male Performance (Jordan Doww).
Like Wineville, Soi Cheang’s Hong Kong action thriller Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In, is up for four awards, including Best Action & Stunts, Best Foreign Film, and Best Action Film.
Kevin Smith‘s semi-sutobiographical comedy The 4:30 Movie comes in at three nominations, including Best Director and Best Comedy Film.
This year marked a change with the Best Overall Film, which has risen from five nominees to seven nominees. Who will take the crown this year? Will it be 1984, Terrifier 3, Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey II, The 4:30 Movie, Life After Fighting, Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In, or the guerrilla-styled film Stampila, shot during the oligarchal reign of Moldova about overthrowing the government?
In addition to the awards, we will celebrate this year’s Breakout Star, Scott Chambers, and celebrate this year’s Hall of Fame and announced the first two inductees of the 2025 Hall of Fame.
