It’s not easy being a female mechanic in this short horror film that looks to be somewhat inspired from a classic Stephen King novel.
A young female mechanic offers $2,500 to two shady men selling a beat up Camaro Z28. Despite their creepy nature, they decide to sell the car to her but when she begins to work on the car, she soon realizes this is one ride she may end up regretting buying.
Written and directed by Sofie Somoroff, this is quite a fascinating short film at seven and a half minutes that has a bit of a message behind it. While its exterior is that of the horror genre, the message that comes across is that females can do anything just as well as men regardless of the occupation. And this couldn’t be more true, especially when it comes to a male dominated industry, such as a car mechanic.
Celina Bernstein (who produced alongside Somoroff and Fckn Nuts helmer Sam Fox) is excellent as the headstrong mechanic. She first has to contend with the two creeps who are selling the car as they come off as very skittish with their slow motion looks. Once it cuts to the garage, this is where things really get chaotic as we see the car go Christine on the mechanic, forcing her in the car in a moment of torture where the twist is soon revealed.
The special effects and cinematography do wonders to see this mechanic go through this intense moment of fear for her life. The twist was pretty shocking in a way but to see how strong this mechanic is to fight back against this demonic car is great. If this were ever extended to a feature film, I would be all in!
Ride Baby Ride is a short and sweet horror film pitting demonic car vs. strong female mechanic, all driven by a headstrong performance by Celina Bernstein.
The film is now available to view on ALTER.
