A group of actors with developmental and physical disabilities attempt to do the impossible in this riveting documentary.
Regan Linton is an actor who after a car accident, ended up paralyzed. However, she has continued acting in small roles in film and television. She has taken on the role as director of the Phamaly Theater Troupe in Denver, Colorado. Like Regan, the actors involved in Phamaly have disabilities, whether it is physical or developmental. Regan is in charge to direct their local production of “Chicago”.
This documentary is of importance and it focuses on the dreams of actors with various disabilities, from autism spectrum to physical disabilities such in case of Lucy Roucis, who appeared as an extra in Better Off Dead before being diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease as well as many others. We take a look at some actors who hold day jobs but are determined to live their dreams after auditioning for the show. One actor, Leonard, who has multiple sclerosis, actually sings for a senior center and wins a role in the play and another, Adam, has cerebral palsy, and works at a hardware store. There is also Megan, who has multiple sclerosis and was born without a hand.
It is great to see these actors work hard like your Hollywood idol to make their dreams come true and succeed. This may seem somewhat like an underdog story and it looks that way. However, it is about overcoming the odds and obstacles and making the show a success. The film proves that just because you have a disability, it does not mean you can’t achieve your dream. Sadly, Lucy Roucis passed away shortly after the show in 2021 at the age of 61.
Imperfect is a fantastic look at living the dream for these aspiring actors. They give it their all and overcome their disabilities…or should we rather say, different abilities as well and put on the show of their lives. Definitely recommended to see this!
