A woman finds a new lease on life in this very raunchy and witty comedy from director Peter Woodward.

Virginia is new to New Orleans and already things are not going as planned. An apparent date turns into a scam and Virginia meets Jake. They seem to get along and Jake offers Virginia to go to his house to relax for a while. Raised in a conservative household, Virginia realizes that Jake lives in a house that houses people who are into polyamory. At first, she is extremely uncomfortable with the situation and had hopes of probably not showing up again.

However, Virginia doesn’t have a job and has been evicted. She convinces Candy, the owner of the house, if she could stay for a while. Candy accepts and soon finds herself in a world she has never imagined seeing. With Jake serving as a mentor, Virginia learns that polyamory is an open world of sexual freedom. Even going to sex clubs with Jake, Virginia finds herself slowly attracted to the young man. However, despite his charms, Jake is afraid of commitment. Will Virginia be able to help Jake overcome his fear and give love a shot?

This is a wild raunchy comedy from writer-director Peter Woodward that melds romantic comedy with the raunchy 80’s and 90’s softcore style adult films. The film is reminiscent of the 2000 Lukas Moodysson classic Together, where it revolves around a commune of eccentrics and the newcomer of the group bonding with the group. However, this adds the ideas of sex and polyamory, showing a realistic view of the subject.

Katherine Ellis is pretty good as Virginia, who comes off as someone who looks to be something of a conceited woman due to the fact that coming from a conservative religious background, she longs to escape that upbringing. We start with her in the car of a guy she slept with, or she thinks he’s the car owner, but he’s actually a rental car dealership guy and she instantly regrets her decision. We see her go from uncomfortable to slowly opening up throughout the course of the film.

Aaron Long amps up the charm as Jake, who gladly embraces the polyamory but is afraid of commitment. He becomes Virginia’s mentor in this world of polyamory and the supporting cast have their own quirks that make this work amidst the explicit nudity and simulated romping throughout the film. Some of the actors go a bit over-the-top but only at certain times but at other times, they show a genuine care for their fellow polyamorous residents, which works here. Even the writer-director himself can be seen in a scene where Jake takes Virginia to a sex club and after a romp, he gives his explanation on why he loves the lifestyle.

Sex-Positive may come off as raunchy and borderline adult film. However, it is more about showing the world of polyamory and friendship meshed with a good story about two people looking to find escapes from their lives.

The film hits select theaters on February 9.
