A college student under enough pressure finds out things are about to get worse in this super 8 murder mystery that is getting a re-release from the gang at Visual Vengeance.

Ted is a college student who has been trying to figure out how to work on his final project for audio class. He must make a project utilizing sounds but has no idea how to go about it. He has a bit of a crush on his classmate, Jennifer, but is shy when it comes to telling her his feelings. Ted works as a singing telegram worker and when he is hired to dress up as a jester for a telegram, he makes a mistake that will change his life forever.

Accidentally knocking on the wrong door, Ted returns to his car only to find Jennifer’s body in the backseat. Afraid he will be suspected of killing her, Ted finds himself in a bind. However, Ted learns the horrifying truth when he is confronted by two mysterious men, Jeff and Vic. Knowing Ted could squeal, Jeff begins to constantly stalk him. As Ted’s life wasn’t bad enough, he has to find a way to complete his project and save his own hide from Jeff and Vic.

Since its inception in 2022, Visual Vengeance focused on shot-on-video gorefests from the 1980s to the 2000s. However, this year’s output relied on more than the gorefests and even delved into some wild sci-fi and insane films. One such film that goes a different route is that of this murder mystery from the trio of James Groetsch, Shawn Korby, and Bill Weiss shot on Super 8, something unheard of for 1990 as Super 8 was more of a thing in the 1970s.

The film, inspired by Brian De Palma’s Blow Out, is quite interesting and is clearly one that you can’t miss a minute as it keeps the viewer engaged. Where John Travolta used video to solve a crime, our hero uses audio. Matt Felmlee is great as our protagonist Ted, who has a crush on his classmate Jennifer but has a hard time with his final audio project. His roommates even try to convince him to join them for a party, he clearly doesn’t have the mindset to do so. The roommates are actually played by the trio of directors so it is interesting to see them in front of the screens.

Jeff Tatum is definitely evil and hulking in the role of killer Jeff Ranslic, who not only killed Ted’s crush in Jennifer, but also tries to ensure Ted doesn’t squeal. He goes as far as ensure Ted’s dreams and at one point, Ted imagines Jeff killing him as he wakes up. However, Ted has a secret weapon in his notion to use audio as a means to expose him for his crimes. At a runtime of only 73 minutes, it goes by pretty quick and the fact that it was shot on Super 8 is bound to delight some viewers.

The Wrong Door is quite a fascinating journey in the vein of Blow Out only replace the visual with sound. The trio of James Groetsch, Shawn Korby, and Bill Weiss do a good job at relying more on sound with little dialogue and bringing us a murder mystery like no other.
