An attempt at an open marriage leads to obsession but with a major twist in the latest film from Miles Doleac.
Kristina and Robert Corbin’s marriage is not doing so well. Robert convinces Kristina to try having an open marriage in an effort to put some spark back. While Robert begins to date family friend and police officer Emma Steadman, Kristina meets her longtime crush, former teen idol Erik LeRoux. The two relationships slowly start out fine. However, when Kristina begins to feel uncomfortable with the situation after a few weeks, she decides to break it off with Erik.
While Emma eventually is okay with ending things with Robert so he can focus on working things out with Kristina, Erik is unhappy with Kristina ending things with him. Erik begins to become obsessed with Kristina, going as far as stalking both her and Robert. Things get more complicated when Kristina becomes pregnant. Believing Robert is the father, Erik becomes unhinged as he is convinced that he is the father. Will Kristina and Robert be able to get through this ordeal before things spiral out of control?
From the onset, the film has the feel of a Lifetime thriller, especially one involving a near broken marriage and an obsessed third party. However, what real-life couple Miles Doleac and Lindsay Anne Williams do with the story is turn it upside down in the form of seeing Kristina’s inner conscience in the form of 80’s style music videos where Kristina is the lead singer of the wonderfully named “Kristina’s Glam Hallucination Band”.
Williams is excellent in the lead role of Kristina, who had a dream of fronting her own band and had a massive crush on teen idol Erik, played by 90s teen idol Jeremy London. London is great as a now washed-up star who blames a former manager for his current status and finds happiness in his relationship with Kristina. As for Robert, Doleac takes center stage and we see his relationship with Emma, played by actor and stunt performer Elena Sanchez, seem more grounded. What’s even more great is that in the band sequences, Robert is seen as a cross of David Bowie and Duran Duran’s Nick Rhodes with Emma as the drummer looking like a cross between AJ Pero of Twisted Sister and Patty Smith of Scandal. As for Kristina, she sports a Pat Benatar look in these sequences.
This brand of using 80’s style neon and effects are a fun complement to an otherwise serious story. Even some of the songs are quite a hoot, especially the moment where we learn Kristina is pregnant as with the song “Vomiting Sucks” informs us. Add to the mix the awesome William Forsythe as Emma’s tough police captain who holds a bit of an insane secret about a favorite show, which shocks even his daughter. The third act is both insane in both the seriousness of the core story and the insanity of the music video dream sequences.
Open turns a serious story upside down with its great 80’s style musical numbers. The cast is great in this film, especially Jeremy London as an unhinged former teel idol and real-life couple Williams and Doleac as the couple who try to make the most of their marriage and ultimately work things out. A perfect treat of a film!
