This wild and insane horror-comedy pays homage to two things related to the 80’s: great B-horror and aerobics.
Phoebe has been hired to join others in a new aerobics video to be produced and directed by Tony Stromboli. However, while Phoebe wants to make the video for the sheer point of bringing aerobics to the mainstream, some of the other video stars are less interested in the exercise and see it as an opportunity for stardom. However, when one of the girls is going to be selected to be the cover girl, the competition heats up.
When Candy, who is into making cheap horror films on the sly, is the favorite to be the cover girl because of certain assets, Phoebe flies into a rage and kills Candy. The killing is witnessed by Isabella, the daughter of Stromboli. Soon enough, seeing that Phoebe had been facing constant bullying from the other girls, she mentors Phoebe in taking them down. Meanwhile, tensions start to rise behind the scenes and soon enough, chaos ensues but who will reign supreme as the cover girl?
This latest film from the duo of Angelica de Alba and Paul Ragsdale is the definition of the greatness that is the 1980s. In that decade, we had great horror films, out of this world cinema, and aerobics. While there have been some great meshings of horror and aerobics in 1986’s Aerobicide (aka Killer Workout) and 1989’s Death Spa, this one takes the cake, paying major homage to the former while updating it with some amazing wackiness seen in today’s horror-comedies.
The cast is quite enjoyable to watch, some of them having some stellar names. Kansas Bowling is great as Phoebe, the newcomer who finds herself bullied because she actually cares about aerobics and the benefits of doing them only to find herself killing those who get in the way. Nina Lanee Kent is great as Angelica, the daughter of the mobster bankrolling the whole project, as she serves as a mentor and at times an actual friend. Kudos definitely goes to the marvelously named Jessa Flux for her role as the favorite to get the cover job, Candy, because she defines in the role what the 80’s horror genre typecast is all about: having great “assets” and showing that femme fatale personality as the likeliest to be promiscuous.
The kills scenes are exactly what they are meant to be. They are completely over the top and horror gore hounds will have their fill in the film. There are cuttings, knifings, and a phenomenal chainsaw kill that would make Leatherface and Sawyer/Slaughter family extremely proud. These kills are complemented with some really over the top comedy moments, including a male crew member’s attempt at being a part of the video by decking out in a leotard that is just unbelievably so funny as well as the mobster’s ex-wife, played by adult film legend Ginger Lynn Allen, seducing a nerdy member of the crew.
Murdercise is what is expected: wild, crazy, and loads of 80’s cheesy goodness! If aerobics, over the top gore and even more over the top hilarity are your cup of tea, then enjoy the tea that is Murdercise!
