This super 8 classic horror film from Bret McCormick is finally getting a re-release and if you love monsters and gore, then this is your film.
In a small town in Texas, Cody is a young man living with his mother and working on a construction site. One night, Cody’s mother begins to feel sick and coughs up blood and something that looks like some tumor. While she begins to feel better, she feels something isn’t going right. Her nightmares soon prove to be a reality.
The tumor comes to life and enters Cody’s body. Cody begins to feel strange and soon finds himself becoming possessed by the creature. As if that’s not bad enough, the tumor has mutiplied and is terrorizing the town. Under the spell of the original tumor, Cody begins killing those close to him and begins to feed the now gigantic monsters their parts. Can Cody be able to overcome the possession or will it be his mother who can stop the abomination?
From the mind of Bret McCormick comes this insane horror film inspired by classic horror films mixed in with some of the great 80’s splatterfests that would be the heart of the genre in your old school local video stores. Reminiscent of films like 1982’s The Beast Within with a dose of Evil Dead and The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, this film is going to make a new generation of gorehounds proud due to its practical effects.
Scott Davis is excellent in the lead role of Cody, a young man who finds himself with a happy life outside of home, where his mother is constantly seen knitting while watching a local reverend on television. However, it is once he finds himself having a tumor inside of him, he gets a double whammy of having the creature coughed up and multiplied like Gremlins as well as being possessed by the original creature, which leads to a very brutal killing spree. The kills include throat slashings, people eaten by the creature, and should be iconic chainsaw kill that is just mindblowing!
There is even a scene that could be said to be similar to a classic scene from Ghoulies II and what’s interesting is that, just when it looks like the movie could come to an end, it takes a massive twist that is unexpected and is quite shocking. Altogether, this is an underrated gem of 80’s horror.
The Abomination is sure to please all generations of 80s horror film fanatics. The story may sound insane, but you have to appreciate the film being shot on Super 8 and the excellent practical effects of its time. A totally must see gem from Bret McCormick.
