Two sisters reunite to go a dive that ends up in disaster in this loose remake to the Swedish film Breaking Surface.

Drew and May are sisters who have reunited as the two have been estranged due to their different relationships with their father and yet, they take an annual trip together. They decide to go to a remote location to go scuba diving. Things start out well between the two because they are taking their minds off their estrangement until the topic comes up again. This leads to a little dissention until something worse happens.

The cliff the sisters dive in begin to crumble. May ends up going 28 meters below sea level and Drew attempts to come to her rescue. However, she is trapped and the only one who can save her is Drew, who must go out to grab more oxygen tanks for May. It becomes a constant race against time for the sisters. With no one around, will May be able to get out from under the water before it’s too late?

There is only one word that can describe this film: tense. Tension is the name of the game in this remake of the 2020 Swedish film Breaking Surface, director Maximillian Erlenwein made some changes in Joachim Hedén’s original screenplay and came up with a very tense and times, heart-pounding remake that focuses on two sisters in a very dire situation.

The heart of the film is the chemistry between leads Sophie Lowe and Louisa Krause. From the beginning, they have the typical sibling relationship, especially that of how they try to work out their differences before, in, and after the situation. The term “opening old wounds” is an understatement to start the film out. However, once May ends up deep in the water that they must overcome their differences to ensure survival, and this is where things get really tense.

While May is suffering underwater, it seems like every time we see Drew come out of the water to grab oxygen tanks, I start holding my breath. The tension becomes very high because it is as if we are unclear if May will be able to keep breathing or not. You also tend to feel for May and only hope she will have enough oxygen to survive each time her sister comes to the land. Especially as the film goes towards the end, the tension rises high, and you can only hope things will turn out well for the sisters.

The Dive may be compared to 48 Meters Down, but there are no sharks here. It is a very heart-pounding very tense isolation film that is driven by the excellent chemistry between Sophie Lowe and Louisa Krause. If you like isolated environment films along with those with high tension, then this is a must for you.
