Fans may not be familiar with the name Dick Maas. However, the Dutch-born director has brought on some of the most interesting horror films from the 80’s to today. The Lift brought us the concept of the “killer elevator”. Amsterdamned is perhaps his best film in my opinion due to its combination of action and horror mixed in with some of the best aerial photography I have seen. Remaking The Lift as The Shaft with a New York City setting, Maas added a dash of suspected terrorism, with the film shot just before 9/11 (the film got its US release in 2003). Finally, Maas brought us Sint, where he twisted the legend of Saint Niklas around, much to the chagrin of some of the local townfolk.

Now, after the cat-and-mouse game film Quiz in 2012, Maas returns to the horror genre with a new kind of animal: a lion that terrorizes Amsterdam. Prey is the title of Maas’ latest film. The cast includes Sophie van Winden, Julian Looman, Mark Frost, Rienes Krul, and Theo Pont.

The film completed production last year and is being set for an April release in its native Netherlands. As for a worldwide release, that remains to be seen yet fans of Maas’ works (such as myself) will be ready once it is out.
