Ted Raimi faces one hour in a single-take thriller where debt, family and conscience collide.

A Single Take With No Escape

Failure! is a 2023 thriller from the United States and Mexico, written and directed by Alex Kahuam. Its boldest idea is built into the form itself: the whole film plays as one unbroken take that runs about 87 minutes. There are no cuts to hide behind, no second chances inside a scene and no way to skip forward. The camera stays with James, played by Ted Raimi, as the pressure in his home slowly becomes unbearable.

Shooting a feature this way is a promise to the audience that what they watch is happening in real time. For the cast and crew it means every line, every door and every camera move has to land on the first attempt. Cinematographer Ernesto Lomeli keeps the camera moving through a crowded house while the frame stays readable, and composer Vincent Gillioz has to support the mood without the safety net of editing.

The Story of James

James has taken over the family plastics business after the death of his father, and he is drowning in debts. His existence is threatened just as his daughter Jessica prepares for a very lavish wedding. The bank wants an answer, the family wants a celebration, and James is stuck in the middle with a deadline that will not move.

The premise is stark. He is given one hour to choose between financial ruin and murder in order to protect the people he loves. That ticking clock gives the single take a clear purpose, because the minutes on screen are the minutes James has left. As the hour passes, his home and his phone are invaded by one character after another, each pulling him in a different direction.

The Man Who Follows Him Like a Shadow

The most unsettling element is a mysterious figure who follows James around like a shadow. He offers advice, often bad advice, and he seems to know exactly where James is weakest. The film keeps asking whether this presence is a ghost, a product of James’s breaking mind, or the devil’s advocate in a very literal sense.

That question gives the film its genre-bending edge. It plays as a family drama, a dark comedy, a crime story and a psychological thriller, sometimes within the same scene. The film’s title is also its theme. Failure here is financial, moral and personal, and James can feel all three closing in at once.

Ted Raimi in the Lead

Ted Raimi is the anchor of the film, and he is also one of its producers. Many viewers know him from the films of his older brother Sam Raimi, including Evil Dead, Darkman and Spider-Man, and from television roles such as Xena: Warrior Princess. Failure! gives him something different: a leading part that demands that he be on screen, and fully committed, from the first second to the last.

A one-take film leaves a lead actor nowhere to rest. He has to move from panic to charm, from anger to exhaustion, while other characters come and go around him. Even critics who were cold on the film singled out his performance as its strongest asset. The supporting cast includes Merrick McCartha, Noel Douglas Orput, Melissa Diaz, Christin Muuli and John Paul Medrano, and they keep the pace alive as the hour tightens.

Three Acts in Real Time

Kahuam structures the film in three acts, even though there is no cut to mark where one ends and the next begins. Instead the changes come through the arrival of new people, the shift in James’s mood and the way the house itself seems to grow smaller. The first part sets the debt and the wedding. The middle brings in the visitors who push him toward a decision. The final stretch asks what he is willing to become.

This is where the format helps and hurts. When it works, the viewer feels trapped in the room alongside him. When it does not, the choreography can feel like a technical exercise rather than a story. That tension is part of why the film divided opinion, and it is a fair point for anyone deciding whether to watch.

Premiere and Reception

Failure! had its world premiere at FrightFest in August 2023, and it later played in Estonia at the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival in the Midnight Shivers programme. Alief handled world sales, and Red Water Entertainment later acquired North American distribution, with a release planned for the first quarter of 2025.

Reviews were mixed. Some critics felt the single-take gimmick overshadowed the writing and found the stakes thin, while others enjoyed the nerve of the idea and the energy of the performances. Almost everyone agreed on one thing: Raimi deserves more leading roles. A film that divides viewers is not necessarily a failure, and this one sparked real conversation about how far a technical stunt can carry a story.

Why Failure! Is Worth Knowing

The film belongs to a growing group of modern thrillers that use the single take as a storytelling tool rather than a trick. It is also a notable step for Mexican filmmaker Alex Kahuam, who produced it through his company Promotora NAE together with Marco De Molina, Kayli Fortun, Jose D. Rodriguez and Raimi.

For genre fans, the appeal is simple. You get a tight setting, a ruthless countdown and a lead actor working without a net. For anyone interested in how films are made, it is a case study in planning and nerve. Whether you finish it impressed, frustrated or both, it is the kind of film that is easy to discuss afterward.

Final Thoughts

Failure! asks a brutal question and then refuses to cut away from the answer. James has one hour, one house and no clean choice. The film may not satisfy every viewer, but its ambition, its lead performance and its relentless real-time structure make it one of the more memorable low-budget thrillers of 2023.
