An estranged father hopes to reconnect with his daughter in this short film that makes you think it will go one way, but turns out to go a different direction.

In the heart of New York City, a man attempts to reconnect with his daughter. As he traverses around the city, he hears voicemails from her. She gives him updates on what’s going on. The plan is that hopefully, he will get to see her again for the first time in years. However, as the voice mails continue, there may be some trouble ahead that could jeopardize the possible reunion.

This short film, running at nearly eight minutes, starts out quite heartwarming. Yes, we see the father feeling a sense of remorse and happiness when hearing from his daughter by voice messages. We see nothing but a smile on his face for most of the film. That is, until he receives a message that mentions being sick and he begins to become a bit worrisome. It gets to where we see him sitting outside of an amusement park and even drinking in his room, wondering whether he will get to see his daughter again. Just wait until the mid-credit scene to get the answer.

Distancia is a realistic and fascinating look at reunion through voice and kudos to lead actor Ed Trucco for his performance as the dad. A short film worth checking out.
