A woman finds herself conflicted by the man she loves and her parents in this wild and wacky horror comedy short from writer/director Sam Fox.

Sandy is in a crisis. She is scared to death of letting her current boyfriend Dan meet her parents. When Dan shows up unannounced, Sandy’s anxiety hits an all-time high. Dan proclaims his absolute love for Sandy and becomes insistent on meeting her parents. When Sandy finally relents, it will be a life-altering event for everyone involved.

I love a wild, wacky, absurdist film now and again, whether it’s short films or feature films. After all, why always take movies seriously? Yes, there are serious films. There are comedy films. There are romance films. There are horror films. Some can be serious, but some can be out of this world and that’s not only okay, but with the right frame of mind, even turning off your brain for just a little while, you can have fun with it. And that’s exactly what Sam Fox achieves with this short film. She makes the intention known and it is a whole lot of fun and insanity wrapped in nearly twelve minutes.

While the film is clearly set in present day, you can’t help but notice has a wild fantasy retro vibe in the characters of Sandy and Dan, played by Maddie Nichols and Vincent Stalba. They come off like a 1950s era romance especially with Dan professing his love for Sandy and yet, Sandy is constantly worried. It is all because the title refers to Sandy’s parents who are in fact, nuts. Like crazy and then some, which leads to a very insane finale to things that had me laughing so hard.

Fckn Nuts is a top contender, no, the front runner for the Best Short Film of 2023. It is a surreal visual look at what can happen if you meet some parents who are so crazy, they define the title in a way like never expected! Sam Fox is definitely a name to look out for when it comes to filmmakers.
