Why Short Films Deserve Attention

A short film has no room to waste. Every shot, line and cut has to earn its place, which makes shorts some of the most focused storytelling you can watch. Many famous directors began with shorts that proved they could tell a story with almost nothing.

For audiences, shorts are the easiest way to discover new talent. You can watch a complete story in the time it takes to drink a coffee, and you might be seeing the first work of a future favorite.

What shorts offer

  • A full story in minutes
  • Experiments that bigger films avoid
  • Early work from rising filmmakers
  • Every genre from comedy to horror
  • A calling card for longer projects

Case Study: The Way Things Used 2 B

This 2025 comedy runs about seventeen minutes and shows how much a short can do. In a handful of locations, it builds a world, introduces three memorable characters and delivers a complete emotional arc about growing up and giving people a second look.

Its writers and directors, Kurstin Moser and Ciara Naughton, show a strong sense of pacing and tone. The film could easily be expanded into a feature, which is exactly the role a good short can play: a proof of concept that makes audiences ask for more.

Story

Does the film tell a complete idea, even if it is small?

Craft

Are the sound, framing and performances working together?

Spark

Does it have a voice that feels new or personal?

How We Watch Shorts

We watch each short at least twice. The first time is for pure experience, and the second is for details such as sound mixing, background props and the choices behind camera movement.

Because shorts are brief, we keep our reviews tightly focused. We highlight what works, name the people responsible and note whether the film hints at a bigger future.

Where to find great shorts

  • Film festival online programs
  • Filmmaker channels and websites
  • Streaming showcases and playlists
  • Crowdfunding campaign pages
  • Our own coverage and recommendations

Submitting Your Short

If you have made a short film, we would like to see it. Send a link, a one paragraph synopsis, the running time and the names of your main cast and crew. We cannot cover every submission, but each one is watched with care, and we try to respond to filmmakers whose work fits our focus on independent cinema.
