After years of developmental hell and many rumored castings and directors, the long dormant reboot of Red Sonja at Millennium Studios has finally began shooting in Bulgaria.
Italian-American model and actress Matilda Lutz (Revenge)(above) has scored the titular role of the warrior Red Sonja. Rose McGowan and Hannah John-Kamen were rumored to play the character with John-Kamen all set to take on the role, but had to drop out in March because of scheduling conflicts.
In addition, Joey Soloway was set to direct, but instead, helming the film is M.J. Bassett, the director of Silent Hill: Revelations, Rogue, and Endangered Species. Soloway and Tasha Huo‘s script, based on the classic character created by Robert E. Howard, is still being used for the film. So who joins Lutz on Sonja’s new adventure?
Wallis Day (Batwoman) will take on the role of the antagonist, Sonja’s wicked half-sister Annisia while Robert Sheehan (The Song of Swan Lake) will play the character of Dreygan. Michael Bisping, Martyn Ford, Manal El-Fetury, and Katrina Durden will also co-star in the film.
Production is underway in Nu Boyana Studios in Bulgaria and will complete production in Greece’s Nu Boyana set.
