Red Sonja is about to get a new sheriff in town with Bryan Singer now officially gone from the project.

Jill Soloway, the creator of the hit Amazon series Transparent, has signed on to take over as both writer and director of the new live-action adaption of the Roy Thomas and Barry Smith invented character, who first appeared in issue #23 of Marvel Comics’ Conan the Barbarian series.

The first live-action Red Sonja film introduced Danish-born model Brigitte Nielsen to Hollywood audiences as the sword-wielding heroine, who seeks to avenge the death of her family by going on a quest to protect a young prince from the evil Queen Gedren. The film didn’t do too well at the box office, but is hailed today as a cult classic.

The new version has been in development for many years as of late, with the likes of Rose McGowan having interest at one point. When Bryan Singer was set to direct, well, everyone knows what had transpired and at first the project was dropped altogether until Millennium Films’ Avi Lerner has decided to drop Singer and keep the film going with announcing Soloway as the new force behind the film this past weekend.

More as this develops.
