Mulan is finally moving at full speed as production has finally begun on Disney’s live-action adaptation of the 1998 animated feature.
To commemorate the news, Disney has posted the official first image of lead actress Liu Yifei, who won a worldwide search and is best known for her role as Sparrow in the Jackie Chan-Jet Li starrer The Forbidden Kingdom, in the titular role.
Disney had this to say about the film:
The eldest daughter of an honored warrior, Hua Mulan is spirited, determined and quick on her feet. When the Emperor issues a decree that one man per family must serve in the Imperial Army, she steps in to take the place of her ailing father as Hua Jun, becoming one of China’s greatest warriors ever.
The supporting cast including Hong Kong action legend Donnie Yen as Commander Tung, Mulan’s mentor; Yoson An as Chen Honghui, a fellow soldier who becomes Mulan’s love interest; Gong Li and Jason Scott Lee as the film’s villains; and Jet Li as the Emperor of China.
Niki Caro directs the film from a script by Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver. Production is in both New Zealand and China and is set for a March 27, 2020 release date.
