Todd McFarlane has found his new Spawn.
McFarlane, who created the legendary comic book hero in 1992, is set to direct a live-action adaptation of his own character based on his own script. The story revolved around Al Simmons, a former Marine betrayed by his own boss and is killed in a blazing inferno. Sent to Hell, Simmons makes a deal with the Devil to see his wife Wanda only to learn it has been five years and she is now married to his best friend.
In 1997, Mark A.Z. Dippe directed a live-action adaptation that starred Michael Jai White as the titular character and was rated PG-13. McFarlane is intending to go a full on R-rated with the horror elements intended by McFarlane’s vision. So who has become “the chosen one” to become Spawn?
Jamie Foxx has signed on to play Spawn, which McFarlane is excited about because in a recent interview, he mentioned when he wrote the script he had Foxx in mind to play the titular character. McFarlane truly got his wish then and to give him his much needed creative control, McFarlane turned to Jason Blum and his Blumhouse Production house, who will produce the film.
The film is still in pre-production but expect to see Spawn in either 2019 or 2020.
