Kevin Smith Makes Good Point About Possible “Toxic” Remake

Would you believe Kevin Smith was offered at one point to helm a remake of Troma’s iconic film The Toxic Avenger?

Talking with Fatman on Batman, Smith revealed that he was offered the director job at one point, but turned it down because he had let the true fanboy in him take over and revealed the following:

“[And] we parted ways fundamentally on the budget, because I was just like, ‘Part of the charm of the Toxic Avenger is that it was made for two nickels. If you’re gonna do it again, don’t spend a lot of money.’ But they were like, ‘No no no, it’s a 35 million dollar movie.’ And I was like, ‘It’s a f*ckin’ remake of The Toxic Avenger, the guy in a tutu with a bad makeup job, what are we gonna spend all the money on?’ So right then and there, I’m clearly not on the same page. In my head, if I need to see a Toxic Avenger remake, it should be done in the spirit of the original. Instead, they were literally trying to start a franchise, Marvel-ize it and stuff like that. And I’m like, ‘I don’t know if you guys saw that movie.’

Steve Pink and Conrad Vernon were names attached to direct the remake and in a shocking move at one point, Arnold Schwarzenegger was attached to co-star as a superhero who would become the titular hero’s mentor after his transformation.

As a fan of the original, I truly agree with Kevin Smith. If they really want to do a remake of the film, they need to cut down on the budget and bring the spirit of the original. The original 1984 film would end up with three sequels, and an animated children’s series, The Toxic Crusaders. With a budget looking around $35 million, they should just do a Toxic Crusaders film rather than a flat out reboot of the character. The cartoon did gain a following, in which Troma founder Lloyd Kaufman came up with at the suggestion of Marvel Comics legend Stan Lee. Marvel Comics even did an 11-issue comic series from April 1991 to February 1992.

Troma did come up with what was ultimately a trailer for a proposed fifth Toxie film, The Toxic Twins, which never came into fruition.

Will we see a remake of The Toxic Avenger? It now looks up in the air at this moment.
