Two familiar faces as coming “home” to the Fast and Furious franchise.
If there is one thing about the beloved action franchise, it’s that Vin Diesel considers everyone from cast and crew “family”. With that said, he has announced that returning to the franchise for Fast and Furious 9 will be director Justin Lin and co-star Jordana Brewster.
Lin made his series debut directing The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift, the third installment of the series and had directed the fourth, fifth, and sixth installment before departing the series. Replacing him for Furious 7 was James Wan and F. Gary Gray helmed The Fate of the Furious, which was released earlier this year. Lin would go on to helm TV episodes as well as direct the recently released Star Trek Beyond.
As for Brewster, she will return as Mia Torretto-O’Connor, the sister of Diesel’s iconic Dominic Torretto. Her last appearance was in Fast 7, which also marked the final film for franchise star Paul Walker, who tragically passed away in a car accident in November 2015 at the age of 40. In the final reel, Walker’s Brian O’Connor is seen driving alongside Dominic to reel off into what could be said to be “retirement”. How Mia will come into play for the new film is still unknown.
The film has been set for an April 19, 2020 release while a spin-off featuring Dwayne Johnson‘s Luke Hobbs and Jason Statham‘s Deckard Shaw will be released on July 26, 2019.
