When Carrie Fisher passed away in December, the fate of her iconic character, former Princess turned General Leia Organa, in Star Wars Episode IX was unknown.
However, it had been revealed that Disney had been speaking with the Fisher estate, which consists of Carrie’s brother Todd Fisher and daughter Billie Lourd about having her appear to some extent in what should be the final official installment of the series. Todd has announced that they will allow Carrie to be in Episode IX, which is scheduled to begin shooting perhaps this summer.
Todd gave the following about the news:
“Both of us were like, ‘Yes, how do you take her out of it?’ And the answer is you don’t. She’s as much a part of it as anything and I think her presence now is even more powerful than it was, like Obi Wan — when the saber cuts him down he becomes more powerful. I feel like that’s what’s happened with Carrie. I think the legacy should continue.”
According to the source, there is some footage possibly leftover from the upcoming eighth episode, The Last Jedi, that will allow Fisher to appear without the use of CGI in Episode IX, to be directed by Colin Trevorrow.
