A while back, rumors were spreading that the 1980’s horror film Maniac Cop would get the remake treatment with Nicolas Winding Refn (right) producing. Now, it is official…it’s happening.
Refn and Lene Børglum will be producing the remake, which starred the late Robert Z’Dar (left) as the titular police officer, Matt Cordell, who goes on a killing spree. Wild Bunch will be handling world sales as Bold Films will be co-producing the film with Refn and Børglum.
The remake was written by Captain America: The Winter Soldier writer Ed Brubaker and Universal Soldier: Day of Recknoning helmer John Hyams will be directing the film. Børglum went on to say that the film will not be a complete horror film but more of a realistic action thriller. Casting is currently underway.
Z’Dar, who passed away in 2015, would reprise the role in two sequels in 1990 and 1993 with William Lustig helming the trilogy. Lustig has given Refn his full blessing as the duo have been friends for years and will be serving as a “creative producer” on the remake with Refn.
Shooting begins this summer for a 2018 release date.
