With Disney making live action adaptations of some of their beloved animated films, it should probably come to no surprise that they are planning a live action adaptation of their warrior princess Mulan.
The story, based on the legendary tale of Hua Mulan, a young woman who enters the battlefield disguised as a man to protect her father, was a hit among fans with its initial release in 1998. A straight-to-video sequel was released in 2004.
The story has been adapted into films before in Hong Kong, beginning with 1939’s Mulan Joins the Army, which starred Liu Ming in the titular role. The Story of Hua Mulan was released in 1951, starring Yam Kin-Fai as Mulan. The 1939 film was remade in 1953 with famed opera performer Yu So-Chau. 1957’s Hua Mulan, The Girl Who Went to War starred Tank Pik-Wan in the role, followed by 1964’s Lady General Hua Mulan, which starred Ivy Ling Po. After the animated Disney release, Vicki Zhao played the character in a 2009 adaptation of the original story.
Disney has announced a release date of November 2, 2018 for their live action adaptation of Mulan. A director is currently being sought out and a global search for a Chinese-born actress to play Mulan will be underway soon. Who would you want to play Mulan?
